eat, live, sleep

In this blog's hiatus Small Wonder Counseling has been in a steady hum with health restorations in those attending the practice.  Thanks to all for the participation involved in consultation, psychotherapy and clinical supervision.

As we step into the holiday season which holds anywhere from cynicism to behaviors symptomatic of mental illness in the underbelly of joy, I write to share teachings which have arrived for me through my work with others.

One is, we are what we eat.  As simple as that sounds, it is true as food makes our body which also houses our mind.  Our neurobiology depends on our food and fluids intake.

Other is, we are how we sleep.  As complex as it could become, it is a simple process of restoration through rest.  Our bodymind is detoxed, cleared, repaired as we sleep, including dense matter such as organs and bones in stages 3 and 4 - returning us to our beautiful alert mind in an invigorated body.

Let's note our cycle of how we eat, how we live when awake and how we sleep as we engage in our days ahead.  Best wishes for a healthy new year!

Where have all the steps gone?

Looking back at the past 2 months of this blog's life and the counseling process during this period, it is apparent that the steps as they happen in getting from the perceived life currently being lived to the one envisioned may not seem obvious.

An example comes to mind with someone who was afraid of dogs.  Steps in therapy came for this person in identifying the thoughts and feelings evoked
during the moments of terror experienced in the presence of a dog, identifying a time when there was not enough time to react and a dog was benign, years of being around dogs in friends' and relatives' homes, and suddenly one day an impulse to pet a dog.

This is a significant event because it is significant for the person in reducing the resources the person spent on worrying about dogs and in trying to protect self from dogs which were not harmful.  It is also significant in letting a small piece of life just happen with no major attention to it other than a moment of connection, joy and even relaxation in what used to be an anxiety producing event which at that time was limiting life for this person.

Such is often the story of breakthroughs in therapy.  They are simply ordinary life lived without need for extraordinary attention paid to it by being in the moment and living that moment.
